On The Outside
Being raised in a small, friendly, place was great to me. I could walk everywhere I needed to go. I was never afraid.
I went to a private school with about 300 kids. We stayed in one room and had one teacher most of the time. Sometimes, for special classes, another teacher would come in and teach us.
We didn't have physical education. We played games on wednesday. We didn't suit up or shower. We wore uniforms. That's how my schooling went from First through eighth grades. We lived in the same house with the same neighbors and friends until I was fourteen years old. It was great!
One day Dad said he had been transferred to a big city. I thought it was a great idea. I was exicted about the move. In no time at all, we were moved, and settled, in a new house, new neighbors, and no friends.
Our house was beautiful to me. It had wall to wall carpet and new furniture, it was great. I was going to go to a Junior high school that two thousand kids were also attending. At lunch time I stood in the girls restroom. I was afraid to eat in the cafeteria. I was self conscious. It was such a culture shock. It was living in a foreign country. Not knowing how to dress, communicate,even how to fit in. It was a scarey time for me. The second year at that school was a great deal better. By then I had learned to fit in better, dress better, understand their lingo better.
I think that this was a great learning experience for me. It is a good thing to teach you how the other half feels. If you see someone who is new, acting lost, confused, help them fit in. I never attended a school that needed uniforms but I did change schools as a Freshman in high school. We moved from the 'burbs into the city for a bit. I won't elaborate but I was quite grateful the next year when we moved back. I never did fit in at the other school. I also had the stigma of being from the suburbs.
I still remember how it feels to be an outsider.

I just listen to the wind, the birds, I watch the earth and I don't get people very much at all. Until I see a title like "On The Outside." I will never fit anywhere with man's organisations.
